Join us in this special experience! We will take you to the wonderful Medieval Village of Montecatini Alto. Montecatini Alto is a hilltop medieval borough connected to the big thermal city of Montecatini Terme, popular destination thanks to the thermal waters. “Alto” in fact means ‘high’ because the ancient village is situated on the top of a hill. Once you will reach the entrance of Montecatini Alto, you will see the historic Funicular, the longest and oldest of Italy, being built in 1898. The Funicular is still working, from April to October, and it helps the inhabitants of Montecatini Alto to get to Montecatini Terme easily without the need to take the car.
With your expert tour leader, you will walk around the ancient village, pass through the narrow streets and stop in the tiny central square entitled to Giuseppe Giusti. You will admire the characteristic statue, the ancient Roman buildings, the artisan workshops and the cozy souvenir shops that embrace this wonderful village that used to be a Roman Castle and fortification.
The second stop of our special tour is at the Grotta Maona caves. This beautiful natural grotto has a constant temperature of 15° degrees, (59° F), and it is deep 20 meters. The galleries inside of the grotto, 200 meters long, will give you the idea of exploring Dante’s Inferno with the ‘waterfalls’ of stalactites and stalagmites. The idea of this enchanted journey seems realistic also because you will enter from one cave and exit from another one, thus completing your travel inside the Earth.
After the visit of the Grotto, another beautiful surprise awaits you. You will participate to a typical and special Italian Aperitif! You will in fact enjoy a refreshing cocktail, which you will combine with a Tuscan buffet. You will try different kinds of Tuscan cold cuts, Tuscan cheeses and focaccia bread. You will also have the chance to try the classic bruschetta, slices of toasted bread with extra-virgin olive oil, rigorously locally produced, and fresh tomatoes with basil leaves.
There is nothing better to end this beautiful tour, with a good glass of wine, some snacks on the side and a wonderful panorama view of the Tuscan countryside!
